Hear from our first-year teachers as they share their reflections, excitement, and fresh perspectives on starting their journey with Envision.

  • “As a new teacher and new adult, Envision and CAL have been accommodating and supportive of my pedagogical and personal journey! While the mornings and nights are tough sometimes, seeing peers, admin, and scholars everyday eases any worries!” – Samuel Deng, CALA
  • receive. I teach every day with the expectation that there will be coaches and administrators in the room, and I can continue on with confidence knowing that they’re here to point out both my successes and my areas of growth.” – Jay Bond, Algebra 2, CALA
  • “I am excited to be a part of a team that consistently reflects on the impact of their work and teaching!” – Carlos Quinteros III, Instructional Aide, CALA
  • “I was inspired to join this community because of its commitment to connection and growth, and I can’t wait to share the joy of Spanish language and culture with our students this year.” – Andres (Yerry) Arenas, CALA
  • “I’m truly looking forward to this new journey at CAL as an instructional coach, walking alongside teachers, celebrating growth together, and creating even more opportunities for students to shine.” – Sarah Gilmore, STEM Instructional Coach, CALA
  • “Being part of this inspiring community excites me, and I look forward to helping students discover their voices through art.” – Britnei Merckle, CALA
  • It has been a real joy to work at CAL! The fellow teachers have been great and the administration has been immensely supportive to me as a new educator! – Caleb Brown, 9th Grade Ethnic Studies, CALA
  • “I am so excited to get to know our lively student community and supportive staff network. I have felt so welcome at Envision so far and I’m looking forward to a fulfilling and engaging year!” – Marion Caldwell, EA
  • “I appreciate so much this time to write and share with you my experience, my voice, I a new Spanish teacher in Envision, in other country, in other city far away from my own country, it’s not easy but it isn’t imposible, I have grateful with each one who help me, assist my ideas, answer my questions and teach me new things. I’m 40 in my country, this age is for being realized or complete, you know…but I wanted something different. I believed that maybe I could travel, meet people, share my culture and learn about other cultures too….then I’m here. As a professional I have been learning more and when I come back to my country teaching all this will be amazing. Thanks Envision, thanks folks because you have kindness when new people need you.” – Profesora Diana Ravelo, EA
  • “¡Hola! My name is Kazi Ayeni-Watley, but the students may know me as A-Dub.  I am originally from Georgia, but have lived in the Bay Area for the past 12 years. What attracted me to Impact Academy is their unrepentant focus on pro-Blackness in their mission statement. At my past sites, I have been alone in my Blackness on campus (not to mention in my department as a Black American Spanish teacher) and did not feel empowered to stand in my personhood. Since being at Impact, I have been able to embrace every aspect of my being and show the students that just because they aren’t born into a language doesn’t mean they can’t learn it. My goal is to strive forward and continue to impart my identity into my students, curriculum, and the campus at large and continue to make great connections with my new school home.” – Kazi Ayeni-Watley, Impact HS
  • “The start of this school year has been incredibly rewarding. I’m most excited about fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment where every student feels empowered to reach their full potential.” – Anonymous, Impact HS

MORE READING AND MATH FOR ENVISION STUDENTS!

Great news for Oakland, Hayward, and San Francisco families: Envision’s schools are BUSTING THE GAP!

We’re celebrating the new CREDO at Stanford University report, which names Envision among the nation’s charter schools that have “eliminated learning disparities for their students and moved their achievement ahead of their respective state’s average performance. [CREDO refers to] these schools as ‘gap-busting’ charter schools. They provide strong empirical proof that high-quality, high-equality education is possible anywhere.”

Specifically, the report found that Envision students gained the equivalent of an additional 66 days of learning in reading and an additional 20 days of learning in math. Across a 180-day school year, that is equivalent to over three months of additional learning in reading and over one month of additional learning in math.

The CREDO study included over 6,200 charter schools across the country from 2014-2019 and found that on average public charter school students gained 16 days of learning in reading and 6 days in math over their peers in traditional public schools.

This great news highlights the hard work Envision educators and students put forth every day. Their persistence is helping us ensure we reach our mission of transforming the lives of students – especially those who will be first in their families to attend college – by preparing them for success in college, career, and life.

Accepted to Cornell University

We’re celebrating Keyla Amador, a Class of 2023 senior from Impact Academy, for her recent acceptance to Cornell University! She shared some thoughts with us:

What are your plans for the future?
I plan on studying politics and government, on the path of becoming a lawyer and serving my underrepresented Hispanic and Latino communities in the field of law.

How did Impact Academy prepare you for college?
Impact prepared me for college by helping me develop competency skills that are crucial in college, as well as the real world. Critical thinking, presentation, and public speaking skills were all key factors that prepared me for college.

Tell us about hearing the news that you were accepted to Cornell.
I applied to Cornell with no expectations at all. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would get into an Ivy League. All my hard work is paying off! As a Mexican American immigrant, I have taken advantage of all the opportunities I am given, as well as the opportunities that I open up for myself through self-advocating. I received my Cornell letter while I was in a Starbucks parking lot, I immediately started crying and I called my parents!

What is something you value that you learned at Impact Academy?
I value critical thinking and collectivism, as they are competencies that Impact teaches and develops in each and every student.

Congratulations Keyla!
