Iveth is City Arts & Technology High School’s 2017 winner of the Jackie Robinson Scholarship Award.
Iveth was born in El Salvador, and raised by her mother, auntie and uncle. 聽When she was 5 years old, her mother left El Salvador and moved to the United States in search of a new home and a better life for her family. 聽Two years later, Iveth and her four-year-old sister traveled to America with the help of a guide, to reunite with their mother and begin a new life. 聽They faced many challenges, such as learning a new language and assimilating into a new culture.
Iveth met these challenges with determination and grace. 聽She has become a successful scholar today because she understood from a young age just how much higher education means to her mom, and to her whole family. 聽In her College Success Portfolio, Iveth described her Philosophy of Education like this, 鈥�Education isn鈥檛 just about learning to remember the lessons taught in a classroom, it鈥檚 about what sticks to you after you鈥檝e finished your classes. It鈥檚 what you learn to use in the real world.鈥� 聽She will take that philosophy with her this fall to the University of California, Merced, to study Computer Science.
